Gukesh: The Rise of a Legend and Chess’s Global Ambassador

Image
In the ever-evolving world of chess, few stories have captured the imagination of fans and skeptics alike as much as the meteoric rise of Dommaraju Gukesh. At just 18 years old, Gukesh has already achieved feats that many players can only dream of over their entire careers. Yet, his journey is just beginning. While the world watches and debates whether he will claim the title of World Champion in the coming years, one thing is clear: Gukesh is destined for greatness, with or without the crown. His critics, including chess legend Garry Kasparov, may need to reconsider their doubts as the young prodigy continues to prove his resilience, creativity, and love for the game. The Making of a Prodigy From the moment Gukesh became the second-youngest grandmaster in history at the age of 12 years and 7 months, the chess world recognized his immense potential. But even prodigies face scrutiny. Critics questioned whether Gukesh, with his aggressive style and rapid rise, could sustain his brillianc...

Gukesh has an advantage with the white pieces in the first game of the World Chess Championships

Image
As the 2024 World Chess Championship commences on November 25 in Singapore, the opening game between reigning champion Ding Liren and challenger Dommaraju Gukesh is poised to set the tone for this historic match. Gukesh, the youngest challenger in the history of the championship, will have the advantage of the white pieces in the first game—a factor that could play a pivotal role in the early dynamics of the match. The Significance of the First Game In world championship matches, the inaugural game often carries psychological weight. A strong performance can boost a player's confidence, while a misstep can have lingering effects. Starting with the white pieces offers Gukesh the initiative, allowing him to dictate the pace and direction of the game. This opportunity to set the tone is particularly crucial for the challenger, who aims to unsettle the reigning champion early on. Gukesh's Aggressive Style with White Gukesh is renowned for his aggressive and dynamic play, especially...

Chess Ratings of Indian Players after the Candidates Chess tournament

Image
As the dust settles down after another wonderful tournament (stressful for the players), it is now time to take a peek at what happened to their ratings. Gukesh gains 20 points in the April 2024 ratings list and is now world no. 6 ahead of world champion Ding Liren, whom he will face in the World Championships finals in November-December. Pragg stays where he is in terms of points and Vidit loses 6 points. In the Women's section, Indian legend Koneru Humpy managed to stem the losses and sits at 2545. Vaishali's miraculous performance in the last five round helped her to climb back to 2489.

Why is Gukesh Dommaraju so Successful?

Image
D Gukesh won the Candidates Chess tournaments and is now the official Challenger for the World Championship! After we witnessed a dramatic candidates tournament, many were left wondering what makes D Gukesh tick. Well there are really no secrets. We will list some important points in a few posts on this site. 1. Gukesh has always believed in following the process and enjoying it. What does this mean?  It means that he focuses on the now and what is to be done at the moment once his goals are set. He probably does not have to think too much about goals anyway because he is always either aiming at the No.1 spot in a tournament or in the world! So, what's left after that is simply to immerse himself in the details of all aspects of the game such as psychology, openings, middle game, and many other aspects. Even when the chips are down in a particular game, he still focuses on what is to be done to get out of a difficult situation. And, when he is winning, how not to get go of the vice...

Live Chess Rating Observations

Image
Arjun Erigaisi won a couple of points in the German Bundesliga and moved to his highest live rating of 2756.3, which also makes him the India no. 1 for the moment. We've already noticed that the India No. 1 title is up for grabs because four of the Indian players (Pragg, Vishy, Gukesh) are rated quite close to each other. Arjun has moved up five places this month and he is currently placed at World no. 9. He can easily overtake Wesley So, Ian Nepomniachtchi, Alireza Firouzja, and Ding Liren. Even Nodirbek Abdusattorov is not too far ahead. Anish Giri has dropped several points this month and is placed No. 15 in the world, which is quite a slip for the classy Giri. The biggest moves will come in the candidates.  Yes, these guys are at unbelievable rating levels. But the good news is that you too can at least strive to get your first initial FIDE Chess rating. How do I get a FIDE rating

Image
The following are general guidelines. Please remember that you need to first train and reach a good level of playing strength before you get a rating. A player who is rated 1000 on the FIDE scale is quite strong in India compared to a person in the general population who plays Chess for recreation. The following need to be met: The player must play at least 9 rated games against opponents in FIDE-rated tournaments. The games can be spread over one or more than one tournaments. The games must be played against five different opponents These nine games can be spread over 26 months. The player must achieve a rating performance over 1000 (this is going to change in a few weeks to 1400). We'll write a separate article about this soon. After the tournaments, the organizers submit the results to FIDE, who will then process it each time, and once all the requirement are met, they'll publish the initial rating for the player.
