Kramnik will be second in the rating list with previous 2nd place holder Aronian now pushed to the third spot. A record number of players will enter the 2700+ rating club. Live Chess Ratings commentary on Women Live Rating

Image
Judit Polgar has lost 9 points after her average showing at the London Chess Classic. She did gain some points towards the end to at least show a semblance of a fight with the top players, but she is obviously not in  top form yet. Hou Yifan is holding on to her 2600+, but the other top seed in the World Championship, Koneru Humpy of India lost quite heavily. She is now below 2600. So we now have only two 2600+ players. The other significant ratings losers are Gunina and N Kosintseva. Among the gainers, obviously Stefanova is the biggest gainer, climbing back to 2515. The World Champion Ushenina is not in the 2500 club, and so is out of the top 16 for now. We do not rule out the possibility of her joining this elite club if she continues to stay in her current form. Obviously, it will be hard with all the celebrations in her home country, Ukraine.

Commentary on the Live Chess Ratings

Image
Magnus Carlsen finally finished the London Chess Classic with a Live Rating of 2861.4 So, he will indeed break the record of Kasparov's all time highest rating. Some readers of other Chess sites were complaining that it was too early to predict Carlsen breaking the record before the London Chess Classic ended. Their objections were valid since Carlsen stands to lose heavy points against players such as Gawain Jones or Judit Polgar. He didn't and he deserves all the praise as the all-time record holder. Congratulations to Kramnik, who has reached his highest rating, the same level as 2002 (2809). Statistics show that the rating in 2002 is superior due to ratings inflation. Nakamura was a significant mover and he is now back in the top 10, nudging recent upmover Mamedyarov to the 10th spot. With Kamsky sliding down disastrously, Hikaru Nakamura is the clear US No. 1 in Chess. Michael Adams used the opportunity that he was provided in the London Classic and has gained go

Polgar out of 2700 list, Berkes is now in

Image
Judit Polgar won against Luke Mc Shane at the London Chess Classic event, but it was not enough to get her back into the 2700 ELO Chess Elite list. However, Ferenc Berkes made up for Judit's exclusion by jumping into the list that now comprises 48 players. Berkes is now rated 2706 on the Live Chess Ratings list.

Commentary on Live Chess Rating

Image
As of today, Magnus Carlsen (2862) is well clear of Garry Kasparov's all time highest rating. The only danger for him is losing two games against weak players, which is a remote possibility with his current form. Nakamura did draw with him on 10th December, which means that Carlsen will collect a slight minus, but nothing significant. The most interesting move on the list is by Kramnik. He is now clear of Aronian (who's lost quite a bit here) by almost 6 ELO points. World Champion Anand is now at No. 7. Mamedyarov has cemented his ranking in the top 10 at least for now.

Stefanova forces tiebreaks against Ushenina

Image
Stefanova: Picture courtesy Chessbase.com Stefanova played confidently against a defensive Ushenina to force a tie break in the World Cup chess tournament. Ushenina made a mistake by trying to play for a draw instead of playing a normal game and paid the price.

Anna Ushenina in the lead, Stefanova in a must win situation

Image
The underdog, Anna Ushenina, beat experienced Stefanova in a Slav defence game with wild complications. Ushenina shocked Stefanova with 17. Nxd5, sacrificing her knight. Stefanova tried passive defence (not her true strength), and the game quickly went into a lost position for her. Ushenina only needs a draw in the last game to win the title.

First Game of the final in the World Cup Chess for Women Stefanova vs Ushenina ends in a draw

The first game of the thrilling tournament between ex-World Champion Antoaneta Stefanova and Anna Ushenina petered out to a draw. Ushenina chose an opening and was ready for Stefanova's reply. After the opening, Stefanova offered a draw but Anna rejected and played for a win. After a few moves, Stefanova got a good advantage, but made a mistake, which Anna used to steer the game to a draw.

Nguyen Anh Khoi has an awesome 10 on 10 at the Youth Chess Olympiad

Image
Nguyen Anh Khoi is leading the Boys U 10 section with 10/10 so far and is already assured of the title. India's N Priyanka is also performing amazingly amassing 9.5/10 and is virtually sure about the title. Many other Indian Chess players are in with a chance to either win titles in their age groups or at least medals. Chief among these players is Aravindh Chithambaram, who just needs a draw in the last round.

Anand is the Chess World Champion 2012

Image
Vishy Anand is the World Champion, again! He beat challenger Boris Gelfand in tie-breakers. The final score was 8.5-7.5. The tie break games were filled with excitement unlike the games with regular time controls. Anand won game 2 of the tie breaks and held on with draws in Games 3 and 4 to win. Earlier, he faced some anxious moments in the 3rd game, where he made a couple of dubious moves. However, Gelfand was unable to capitalize due to severe time pressure and drew a winning game. Gelfand holds Anand again, holding on dangerously

Image
Anand - Gelfand  Photo from thechessdrum.net Challenger Boris Gelfand drew with the black pieces against Anand again in the 10th game of the World Championship match. With only two more normal time games to go, Gelfand is now definitely considered to have equal chances in the match. Only if the match goes into a tie-break, most consider Anand to be the favorite since he plays more quickly. http://www.chess.co.uk/twic/chessnews/events/world-chess-championship-2012/world-chess-championship-anand-gelfand-game-10 The most stunning fact of Game 10 was that Gelfand was able to face an off-beat variation in the Sicilian Defence without even batting an eyelid. His preparation seems to be of the highest order since Anand has not been able to threaten him except in Game 8.

The draws keep coming in the World Chess Championships 2012

Image
Gelfand and Anand drew their sixth consecutive game in the World Chess Championships 2012. The match is starting to evoke criticism, but there are some defenders who are quoting the reason of shortness of the match and that hence caution is justified. Kasparov has even gone so far as to say that Anand has lost his motivation, which led to huge protests by the Indian media. Kasparov thought that Anand missed a chance to win in the third game, when he had to look at the game from a different angle and push through. After all, the playing strength is not very obvious with this level of preparation and Anand should grab the minutest advantage. Meanwhile, Boris is holding on well and even pushing Anand to the defensive quite a few times. Anand will need to defend another game with black when they resume after the rest day. Ivanchuk wins Capablanca Memorial Chess Tournament 2012

The mercurial Vassily Ivanchuk won the Capablanca Chess Tournament of 2012 with 6.5/10. Dominguez and Nepomniatchi finished tied at 5.5 points a piece. Vladimir Potkin, Quesada Perez Yuniesky, and Viktor Laznicka finished 4-6 in an all play all tournament.

Anand holds comfortably with the Semi-slav, again

Defending World Champion of Chess, Viswanathan Anand, held Challenger Boris Gelfand to a draw in the 4th game of the 12 game match being held at Moscow. Anand deployed the Semi-slav against 1.d4 and drew quite easily. Gelfand changed the move sequence on move 10, but Anand was well prepared and played fairly quickly. Replay and watch the game here!

Gelfand is lucky to hold the 3rd Game of World Chess Championship 2012

Image
V Anand came very close to winning the 3rd game of their World Champinship match, but played a safe move on the 35th, under some time trouble. Anand tried to steer Gelfand away from the Gruenfeld by playing an anti-Gruenfeld 3. f3 It appears that Gelfand is very well prepared for this match and is determined to hang on and trouble Anand. The match is being held at Moscow, probably the World's Capital City of Chess. Anand is the defending Champion.

Anand, Gelfand draw the first two games

Image
The reigning World Champion, V Anand and Boris Gelfand drew the first two games in the Chess World Championships of 2012 in Moscow. Gelfand did well to easily hold with black pieces in the first game, Anand returned the favor, doing the same in a Semi Slav in the second game.

Levon Aronian bags Tata Steel Chess tournament, Carlsen second

Image
Levon Aronian of Armenia did not give any chance to Carlsen to catch him up and in the end won the prestigious tournament at Wijk aan Zee of 2012. Aronian produced some gems in the tournament and Carlsen's usual efficiency was not sufficient. Caruana was the find of the tournament. In Group B, P Harikrishna finished first and could be invited to next year's Group A. The chances appear more bright since Harikrishna is from India and the main sponsor is an Indian company.

Wijk aan Zee 2nd round highlights and Interesting Live Chess Rating Observations

Image
Levon Aronian is on 2/2 after the 2nd round of the Tata Steel (formerly Corus) Chess tournament of 2012. Aronian beat American Chess star, Nakamura. Caruana beat Karjakin. In other groups, Harikrishna beat Lahno and Tiviakov beat Timman. Young Sahaj Grover of India beat Paehtz of Germany. After this round, we have some interesting observations to make on the Live Chess ratings. Magnus Carlsen is just 13 points shy of Kasparov's all time highest FIDE rating of 2851 Aronian will surpass Anand as the 2nd highest ever FIDE rated player if he gains another ELO point but retains it until the end of the rating period. Caruana is nearly 2750 at the age of 19 and is ranked 12 in the World! Giri is 2735 and is No. 17 in the World! Harikrishna has gained impressive ELO after his 2/2 start, but it remains to be seen if he can mantain it. He has had to face frustration many times to reach 2700.
