Ciudad de Pamplona Chess - Vallejo Pons in the lead

Francisco Vallejo Pons of Spain is in the lead after 3 rounds of the Ciudad de Pamplona chess tournament. He was held to a draw by the experienced Beliavsky. Khamrakulov was the lone winner today. He beat young Maxim Rodshtein. The other two games were drawn. Top seed Wang Yue was held to a draw, the third straight time. He has been fairly active this year and it remains to be seen if he can whip himself into action soon. The local players are stealing the thunder for now. Ciudad de Pamplona Round 2

The young but strong Maxim Rodshtein of Israel beat a very strong Gabriel Sargissian in the second round of the Ciudad de Pamplona tournament. Local hero Francisco Vallejo also won over Jobava Baadur. Vallejo Pons forced Baadur to resign after 69 moves when the Georgian was a clear piece down in a slightly complicated end game where Baadur made several seriuos mistakes to lose a knight for almost nothing. The Rodshtein vs Sargissian game was a roller coaster. Rodshtein capitalized on a faulty simplification effort by Sargissian and later won an exchange. But he could not capitalize on it. But Sargissian gave the young Israeli another chance by making inaccurate moves and resigned the game again an exchange down. The other two games were drawn fairly early out of the opening in 21 and 30 moves. The first round of the CIUDAD DE PAMPLONA tournament started with a well-deserved win for veteran Alexander Beliavsky against Gabriel Sargissian. Beliavsky capitalized on an early advantage to prevail against Sargissian. The other winner was local favorite Francisco Vallejo Pons against the last seed, Ibragim Khamrakulov.
