Chess Ratings rant

Harika is back deep into the top 10 in the live ratings again with a creditable win over the very strong Mamedov from Azerbaijan in the Abu Dhabi Chess tournament. Nepomniachtchi moves up to No. 4 on the Rapid ratings. Kasparov loses 13 pts so far and it will take a while to see what his true strength today is (of course it will not harm his all time great status). Le Quang Liem is proving that he was a good choice for the Rapid and Blitz. He is plus 14 ELO in the event.

Kramnik Trivia

Did you know that Kramnik was comprehensively beaten by Alexei Shirov in a 10 game Candidates match in 1998? Kramnik's later wins over Kasparov, Leko, and Topalov overshadowed this loss. Kramnik lost to Shirov -2 +0 with seven draws. Shirov won the 4th and the 9th games of the match with in a Petrov (Modern Attack) and Neo-Grunfeld Defense game respectively. The 9th game win was with black. The Shirov - Kasparov match for the title did not materialize for want of sponsorship.

Topalov back at No.1 on Live Chess Ratings List

How to calculate Live Chess Ratings You can use FIDE's rating calculator to calculate changes to ratings for every game. Rtg = Rating of a player according to the previous list For single game calculations, keep the following values for W W=1 if the player has won W=0.5 if the player has drawn W=0 if the player has lost For the top player list, use Kval = 10 Example: If Kasparov returns to play rated events, plays Carlsen and wins one game, the calculation is as follows. (Assuming Carlsen's rating to be 2786) Rtg = 2812 Rc = 2786 W = 1 Kval =10 Click Calculate . Kasparov will gain 4.6 points for the win against Carlsen, who in turn, will lose that many points.

Its crowded at the Chess top !

There is a mad rush for the top chess position of the world. Ever since discussions on live ratings have started, chess fans have started following them more keenly than the FIDE ratings, which are published only once in 3 months. We feel that Wang Yue, with his clean style, will soon be pushing the top 5. Aronian will bounce back by next year. Ivanchuk continues his Yo Yo. Also impressive is Morozevich's rise. Even his old tormentor, Kasparov is all praise for his "fresh chess". Here are the current standings: 01 Anand 2798 02 Ivanchuk 2788 03 Carlsen 2787 04 Morozevich 2787 05 Topalov 2777 06 Kramnik 2772 07 Radjabov 2752 08 Aronian 2752 09 Leko 2747 10 Adams 2736 11 Wang Yue 2736 12 Mamedyarov 2731 13 Karjakin 2730 14 Kamsky 2729 15 Ponomariov 2727

Roustam Kamsky resurfaces

Roustam (Rustam?) Kamsky, the father of the World Cup Champion 2007, Gata Kamsky has reappeared on the chess scene. In a letter appealing for "moral and financial support" from the US federation and the mayor of New York, Bloomberg, Kamsky has written a long letter justifying the actions that the Kamskys took right from the days of the Soviet Union to his defection, quitting chess and playing again. This appeal is apparently to garner support for Gata to prepare to win the World Chess Championship of chess. In the letter, the senior Kamsky accuses Kasparov and Karpov of trying to sabotage his son's career. The letter is available on the chess blog of Fernando Arrabal here : http://chessarrabal.blogspot.com/

Kasparov invites Putin to a Russian Challenge !

Image
Garry Kasparov, the retired chess genius turned politician, gave his views on Putin winning Time Magazine's Person of the year on the official "The other Russia" website. He also invited the Russian leader to a duel in speaking or writing in Russian. Putin had earlier criticized Kasparov for speaking in English to reporters after being arrested. Kasparov claims that Putin blocks all the Russian that he speaks or writes. Anand thirsts for a game with Kasparov

V Anand, the recently crowned world champion, is craving for another chance to play Kasparov. Anand, who is preparing for the Corus chess at Wijk Aan Zee (Netherlands) tournament to be held in January considers playing a match against Kasparov as one of his dreams. More about this on the Rediff site - http://www.rediff.com/sports/2007/dec/19chess.htm And to put your memories to a jog, here is the Game 10 of the World Championship match at the World Trade Center in 1995. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e96IovA3WbU Anand never really got another shot at Kasparov in a match. He was pretty young in 1995 and combined with Kasparov's vicious tactics, he never really had any chance.

Garry Kasparov released from jail

Garry Kasparov the energetic chess champion (is still a force on the chess servers), was released today from jail. Hordes of reporters have been thronging his residence and we can expect another set of interviews, press releases, press conferences. Kasparov has chosen the United States media as his chosen voice, and it remains to be seen if he uses that weapon yet again. Earlier, Kasparov refused food and water fearing that it may be poisoned. So, it was a two-in-one. Hunger strike and safety from poison ! Kasparov used his knight fork yet again.
