- The King's Gambit is unsound. Computers have proved that black wins by force in 56 moves.
- If the last piece of the puzzle is solved, computers will be able to prove the French Defence is also unsound. It loses in under 89 moves.
- The Petroff Defence is indeed a draw. It is a draw by perpetual in 68 moves or 76 moves depending on the variation on the 36th move.
- Bobby Fischer - Boris Spassky world championship match held. Fischer wins 12.5 - 9.5
- Vishwanathan Anand announces his retirement after a long reign at top level chess. He is currently ranked 14th with a rating of 2918.
- China win the Chess Olympiad for the third time in succession. India again had to be content with the second position. USA finished third. Hou Yifan was the star performer for China. She won the Gold medal on the third board with a 9/10 score, performance rating 3015.
- The Hou Yifan - Judit Polgar match ended in a loss again for Polgar. The eventual score was 12.5-10.5 in the regular 25 minute games. They did not have to play the 4 min rapid or 1 min blitz games.
