Round three game 1 at Khanty Mansiysk
Ivan Cheparinov shocked second seed Shakriyar Mamedyarov in the first game of round three at the World Cup at Khanty Mansiysk. One very interesting fact is that Cheparinov is also the training partner of Veselin Topalov. If at all Cheparinov goes all the way, one wonders what kind of a battle will Topalov vs Cheparinov ?
Mamedyarov had several chances to save the game. But with both the kings pretty much exposed, both had their chances and Cheparinov took his chances. Mamedyarov resigned in a hopeless position. It remains to be seen if Mamedyarov brings his famed fighting skills to battle when he also the advantage of the white pieces.
Other winners on this day were Kamsky with a technical grind of the equally technically-skilled Kiril Georgiev (yes, of Bulgaria !). Michael Adams beat Zhou Jianchao, Dmitry Jakovenko beat Zoltan Almasi, Wang Yue beat countryman Bu Xiangzhi.
