World Cup Chess Round Three - Day 2

The normal time games of round three are over.

Ivan Cheparinov hammered the nail in Mamedyarov's coffin by drawing the second game. The draw was agreed when he had a slight plus.
Alexei Shirov uncorked his tactical machine gun from a seemingly quiet position. Adams advanced in his ruthlessly efficient style. Carlsen gave himself a nice present around birthday time by moving into the round of 16, while Gata Kamsky is efficiently disposing off lesser ranked players, even though his opening preparation is not yet top notch. Ponomariov did not have to go through the second game noose this time. But the first game was almost that noose.
One Chinese player moved to the elite 16. We feel this is a sign of the times to come. Watch out for the domination that is inevitable.

The following players advanced without having to play the rapid and blitz games.

  • Ivan Cheparinov

  • Alexei Shirov

  • Michael Adams

  • Evgeny Alekseev

  • Magnus Carlsen

  • Gata Kamsky

  • Vladimir Akopian

  • Dmitry Jakovenko

  • Ruslan Ponomariov
